RHYTIDOPLASTY/FACE LIFT

Pre-Op

Rhytidoplasty, also known as a facelift or facial rejuvenation surgery, is performed to correct the signs of facial aging. As the skin begins to lose elasticity, excess skin appears, facial volume decreases, and grooves become more pronounced. Rhytidoplasty helps reduce or correct these conditions, giving the patient a more youthful appearance.

The procedure involves removing excess facial skin and tightening both the skin and the underlying muscles of the face and neck.

It is often combined with other facial surgeries, such as brow lift, forehead treatment, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), mentoplasty (chin surgery), localized liposuction, or rhinoplasty (nose surgery). There is no specific age requirement; the procedure can be indicated whenever visible signs of aging are present.

Preoperative care includes:

  • Photographic documentation and skin quality assessment, observing spots, wrinkles, the degree of laxity, allergies, facial and cervical muscle testing and range of motion;

  • Checking for permanent makeup and its potential impact on surgery.

A deep skin cleansing is recommended 1 to 2 weeks before surgery. Strengthening exercises for facial muscles—especially the orbicularis muscles—are beneficial to help reduce potential eyelid drooping. Lymphatic drainage, peelings, and hydration treatments are also indicated.

For smokers, it is advisable to stop smoking at least four weeks before and after surgery, as smoking interferes with tissue oxygenation and impairs healing.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks prior to surgery.

Postoperative Care After Rhytidoplasty (Facelift Surgery)

  • The main concern is care of the auricular (ear) region.

  • Neck rotation movements should be restricted for one to two weeks. The patient must sleep strictly in the supine position (on the back) using head stabilizers.

  • Physiotherapy should begin on the third postoperative day, counting from the day of surgery or as soon as authorized by the surgeon.

  • The face is usually swollen (edematous), sometimes with bruising (ecchymosis) near the incision sites, and the ears are typically more sensitive.

  • The patient will be evaluated and documented on the first day of treatment, and a physiotherapeutic diagnosis will be made accordingly.

  • 5 to 10 sessions are recommended over 2 to 4 weeks, but this may vary depending on the initial evaluation and the patient's daily progress.

  • Postural guidance, positioning instructions, and movement demonstrations are essential for the patient and any caregivers.

  • Wound care and hygiene will be performed when necessary and only at the request of the physician.

  • Manual lymphatic drainage is performed in all sessions. We apply multiple techniques (Leduc – Godoy – Vodder), with international certification and ongoing training to ensure top-quality and precise care.

  • Use of a facial compression band is recommended for 15 days full-time, followed by another 15 days of intermittent use, depending on the patient’s progress.

  • Kinesio taping may be applied to help reduce swelling (edema), alleviate discomfort, and provide additional skin support.
