GYNECOMASTIA

Pre-Op

Gynecomastia is the excessive enlargement of male breasts due to a hormonal imbalance. It is more common than many think, affecting more than 40% of men in one or both breasts, and can cause embarrassment and low self-esteem. Surgery is recommended based on the degree of breast enlargement.

In the preoperative phase, strengthening the pectoral muscles and trunk stretching are encouraged. Depending on the approach of the surgery, circulatory preparation in the areolas may be necessary to assist with post-surgery circulation.

Post-Op

Postoperative Care After Gynecomastia Surgery:

  • The main concern is monitoring the coloration of the areolar region.

  • Movement of the upper limbs (arms) should be restricted for 15 days to minimal extension, just enough to allow underarm ventilation and hygiene.

  • Physical therapy should begin on the third or fourth postoperative day, counting the day of surgery as day one.

  • The patient will be evaluated and documented on the first day of care and will receive a physiotherapeutic diagnosis based on that assessment.

  • A minimum of 5 to 10 treatment sessions is recommended within a 2 to 4-week period; however, this number may vary according to the initial assessment and the patient's daily progress.

  • Guidance and demonstrations regarding positioning, posture, and movement are essential for both the patient and any caregivers.

  • Wound care and hygiene will be provided when necessary and only at the physician’s request.

  • Manual lymphatic drainage will be performed in all sessions. We master various techniques (Leduc – Godoy – Vodder), with international training and ongoing team education to ensure consistent quality and precision in care.

  • Electrotherapy typically begins between the 5th and 10th postoperative day, depending on the physiotherapeutic assessment and the healing needs at the time. Daily evaluations guide this decision. We offer a range of modalities including laser, ultrasound, endermotherapy, high-frequency ozone, carboxytherapy, and radiofrequency.

  • Compression garments or chest bands are recommended for 30 to 60 days, depending on the progression of the scar.
