BLEPHAROPLASTY

Pre-Ops

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is recommended for both women and men who have concerns about skin laxity or excess fat bags around the eyes. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. It is important to note that blepharoplasty can also have functional indications. For example, drooping upper eyelids can interfere with the field of vision and increase visual fatigue.

In the pre-operative phase, photographic documentation is required, as well as an analysis of the skin quality around the eyelids, observing for blemishes, wrinkles, degree of sagging, allergies, ocular movement, and checking for any permanent makeup and its influence on the surgery.

A cleaning session is necessary one to two weeks before the surgical procedure. Facial strengthening exercises, especially for the orbicularis muscles, are beneficial in reducing potential eyelid sagging. Lymphatic drainage, chemical peels, and hydration treatments are also recommended.

Smoking must be stopped at least 30 days before and after the surgery.

It is important to avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks before the surgery.

Post-Op

Post-operative care for blepharoplasty:

  • The main characteristic is edema in the upper eyelids.

  • The eyelids will experience slow movements and dryness in the eyes for 2 to 3 weeks, possibly remaining partially open during the first few days due to the swelling.

  • Physiotherapy treatment should start on the third day after surgery, counting the day of the surgery or when authorized by the doctor.

  • The eyelids are usually well-edematised (swollen), sometimes with bruising (purple spots) across the eye area, either unilaterally or bilaterally.

  • The patient will be assessed and documented on the first day of treatment, and their physiotherapy diagnosis will be based on this evaluation.

  • Functional tests on eye and eyelid movements should be performed.

  • It is recommended to have 5 to 10 treatment sessions within 2 to 4 weeks, but this number may vary depending on the physiotherapist’s assessment on the first day and the patient’s daily progress.

  • Instructions and demonstrations of proper positioning, postures, and movements are essential for the patient. For example, avoiding sleeping on one side.

  • Care for dressings and hygiene when necessary, as per the doctor's request.

  • To prevent further swelling in the eyelids, apply cold compresses.

  • Manual lymphatic drainage should be performed in every session. We are proficient in various techniques (Leduc, Godoy, Vodder) with international training and conduct ongoing training with the team to maintain high-quality, perfect service.
